Endo, Davies Earn CSA All-American Awards

For the last decade, University of Rochester has had some of the best squash players in the country grace its courts.

The 2017-18 College Squash Association (CSA) season was no different as the Yellowjackets finished with two All-American selections in senior Tomotaka Endo and first-year Ashley Davies.  Both were 2nd Team All-American selections, and it was the 11th straight season UR has had multiple All-Americans from the CSA.

For a player to be considered for All-American status, they must compete in at least 50% of their teams matches and competed at the CSA Individual Championships.  1st Team All-Americans earn that by being ranked in the top-4 in the final regular season individual rankings or post a top-10 finish at the individual championships.  2nd Team honorees end the regular season ranked 5-10 individually, finish in the top-16 at the individual championships or win one of four Molloy Division draws at the individual championships.

2017-18 was Endo's fourth straight All-American honor, as he joins an exclusive list in Rochester squash history as the sixth ever to accomplish that feat.  Other squash four-time All-American honorees include Jim Bristow '10, Benjamin Fischer '12, Neil Cordell '16, Ryosei Kobayashi '17 and Mario Yanez Tapia '17.

This season, the senior finished with an even 11-11 record overall, posting five wins over nationally ranked players, tying for the most on the team.  He was 3-1 at the #1 position and 6-6 at #2.  He qualified for the Pool Division at the CSA individual championships for the second time in his career, battling for the individual national title.  He was beaten in the round of 16 by Princeton's Youssef Ibrahim, but ended up defeating his teammate Davies in the consolation round.

Overall, Endo squared off in nine matches against All-American competition this season, posting three victories, coming against Davies at the individual championships, against Andrew Douglas of Penn at the Price-Bullington Invitational and against Yale's Harrison Gill in late January.  For his career, Endo finishes with a 57-24 overall record, good for a .704 winning percentage.  He ranks eighth all-time in Rochester history in total wins and is tenth in winning percentage.

23457Davies joined the team in January and was immediate thrust into the top spot on the ladder for the Yellowjackets.  Playing at #1, he was tasked with playing against the top players of UR's opponents nearly every match, which accounted for 14 matches against 2017-18 All-Americans.  His overall record was 5-10, with four of those wins coming against All-American selections, three of which ended on the first team.

He defeated Drexel's Lucas Rousselet by a 3-0 score in his second ever match in a Yellowjacket uniform.  In mid-February, Davies defeated Princeton's Youssef Ibrahim 3-0 and then won UR's only point against top-ranked and eventual national champion Trinity the following day, topping Kush Kumar in four games.  At the CSA team championships, he avenged an earlier season loss to Penn's Andrew Douglas, winning 3-0 to help UR advance to the consolation final of the Potter Cup tournament.

Endo and Davies combined to earn the 42nd and 43rd all-time All-American honors in Rochester's squash history, ranking as the fourth most among any sport at the school.  A total of 17 different athletes have combined to earn those 43 All-American accolades.
