Union's Early Goal Results in 1-0 Loss for UR

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Host Union College scored an early goal and made it stand up for a women's soccer victory as Union defeated the University of Rochester, 1-0, at College Park on Saturday afternoon.

Rochester is 0-2-2 overall. Union claimed its first win of the year. The Dutchwomen are 1-3. Union was 0-2 at Rochester's Flower City Classic last week.

The Yellowjacket defense has been sound and efficient this year. Rochester gave up a goal to SUNY Geneseo in the Flower City Classic (it ended 1-1), then tied Montclair State University 0-0. UR lost, 1-0, to Buffalo State in midweek before losing at Union Saturday. That's a scant three goals allowed in 400 minutes played.

Offensively, the Yellowjackets are still trying to complete all the links for offensive consistency. UR outshot Union, 9-8, on Saturday and forced Union goalkeeper Kelsey Hartsoe to make six saves – three in each half. Madilynne Lee returned to the Rochester net. She made three saves in 90 minutes and allowed the one goal.

Union scored off a corner kick less than three minutes into the match. Nicole Sturno played the ball out of the corner and Katie Monahan converted at 2:26. Lee denied Union 12 minutes later by saving Sturno's shot directly from the corner kick.

Hartsoe made two saves on Megan Runyan and one on Lee Stagg in the first half to keep her sheet scoreless. In the second half, the Yellowjackets stepped up the offensive pressure. Runyan's corner kick eventually resulted in a shot by Dani Aceves which was blocked. Hartsoe saved from Runyan and then the UC defense blocked a Runyan try. In the last 10 minutes, she made saves on shots by Kim Stagg and Paige Gloster.
