Hassett Is Named An Academic All-American

As an undergraduate, Jeremy Hassett excelled in middle distance events for the track and field teams at the University of Rochester. His work over the long haul as a student has achieved distinction. Hassett has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Men's Cross Country/Track & Field Team after voting by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Hassett is a Second Team selection to the elite group. CoSIDA members named three teams of 15 people.  Twelve of the 45 honorees had perfect 4.00 grade point averages. Eight of the 12 were seniors and a ninth man was a graduate student.

He is a native of Newark, N.Y. and an alumnus of Newark High School. He graduated with a GPA of 3.98 on the 4.00 scale, majoring in audio and music engineering.

As an athlete, Hassett won seven New York State championships over a four-year career in four outdoor and three indoor middle distance events (800, mile, 1,000, 1,500, 4x800 relay [twice), distance medley relay). He won seven medals at the ECAC Championships for top-eight finishes. He is part of the University's record-setting distance medley relay team.

He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa this spring. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society. Hassett was selected as Rochester's Top Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2016. As a junior, he was named as a Provost's Circle Scholar. He was a member of the Varsity Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He was named as a USTFCCCA Scholar by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Hassett won a faculty prize in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2016. He was a research assistant in the Plasma and Ultrafast Laboratory on campus. Last summer, he was a research assistant at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.

With the selection of Hassett, Rochester has 96 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans since the first selection in 1976 (Mike Corp, a football player). This is the 16th honor for a men's cross country/track & field athlete.

In the past five years, five men have earned Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA in the sports of cross country/track & field: 2012 (Nicholas Chisholm, Jason Zayac), 2014 (Adam Pacheck), 2015 (Ethan Pacheck), 2016 (Jeremy Hassett).
