Union scored an early opener, but Rochester equalized with 20 minutes to go as the women's soccer teams battled to a 1-1 tie in double overtime at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Â
It was the second tie in as many games for the Dutchwomen (0-0-2). The Yellowjackets are 1-0-1. Rochester opened its season with a 3-0 win over Houghton College on Tuesday night.
Â
Union scored on a counter-atttack after some Rochester pressure at the other end. Katie Monahan played the ball to Breana Derella on the left wing. From 15 yards off the endline, she directed a shot into the lower right hand corner of the goal (20:40) beyond the reach of Rochester goalkeeper Madilynne Lee.
Â
Rochester applied some pressure, but couldn't create good scoring opportunities, partially due to the defensive work of Union. The Dutchwomen dropped back in waves to keep the Yellowjackets from maneuvering deep in the penalty area.
Â
The Yellowjackets finally broke through for an equalizer – which needed to be verified. In the 70th minute, Lee Stagg hit a long drive from left wing to the underside of the crossbar in the top right corner. The ball bounced out and a teammate headed the rebound over the crossbar. The referee halted play to check with the linesman who verified the ball did break the plane and the goal was awarded at 69:14.
Â
In goal, Lee made one save for Rochester. Erica Matteo made two saves in goal for Union.
Rochester's next game is scheduled for 4 pm on Wednesday at Buffalo State.
