Late Emory Run Denies UR Upset Bid

ATLANTA – Jonathan Terry and Alex Foster combined for 11 points down the stretch as Emory University fought off a Rochester rally and defeated the Yellowjackets, 88-69, in the regular season finale for both teams.

With the victory, Emory clinches the University Athletic Association title and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Eagles are 20-5 overall, 10-4 in the UAA. They were ranked No. 15 in the current poll by D3hoops.com.

Rochester finished at 6-8 in the UAA, 10-15 overall. "Whenever you play Emory, it's going to be a game of runs," said Rochester head coach Luke Flockerzi. "They made a big one at the end. All credit to them."

Jared Seltzer led Rochester with 20 points. Dylan Peretz scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Kevin Sheehy had 13 points.

Terry led Emory with 18 points. Michael Florin had 17 points and six assists. Davis Rao (16), Austin DaGue (13) and Foster (11) each scored in double figures for the Eagles as well.

Seltzer was a big part of a Rochester rally that saw the visitors climb within two points, 71-69, with just under eight minutes remaining. With just under 12 minutes left, Rochester was down by 14 points, but made some big plays.

Mack Montague scored on a layup. Seltzer got one to drop inside the paint, and Sheehy sank a three-pointer. That pulled Rochester within 69-62 with 10:20 to go.

Foster made two free throws after a technical foul against the Yellowjackets. Florin missed the front end of a one-and-one. Seltzer hit a 3-pointer on Rochester's trip downcourt to cut the deficit to 71-65. Peretz slid inside for a tip-in (71-67) and Seltzer scored on a layup with 7:59 to play, bringing the Yellowjackets within two.

The offense couldn't convert after that. Emory finished the game on a 17-0 run. The key portion came over a five-and-a-half minute stretch as the Eagles slowly pulled away. Terry hit a foul line jumper. Foster made one of two after a bench technical against Rochester. Terry scored on a layup as did Florin. Emory applied the clinching blows with back to back 3-pointers by Foster (he was just 3-14 from the floor) and Terry to stretch the edge to 86-69 with less than two minutes left.

In the first half, the Yellowjackets made only 13 of 32 from the floor (40.6%), three of nine outside the arc. They commited 10 turnovers. Emory hit 17 of 30 from the field (56.7%), four of eight on 3-point shots (50%) and commited only six turnovers. Florin had 10 points and four assists in the first half. Rao and DaGue had 10 points as well. Peretz scored eight first-half points for Rochester. Seltzer and Sam Borst-Smith had six. Emory led, 46-32, when the teams hit the locker rooms for halftime.

Rochester stayed with striking range by making seven of nine floor shots over the first eight minutes. For the second half, the Yellowjacket shooting was targeted, hitting 13 of 24 overall.
