University of Rochester head coach
Luke Flockerzi is a finalist for the 2013 Glenn Robinson National Coach of the Year Award.
The award will be presented on April 5 at the
Collegeinsider.com awards banquet in Atlanta, GA, site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championships.
Flockerzi is one of 15 finalists for the award. The others are Chris Bartley (WPI), David Hixon (Amherst), Steve Howes (Catholic), Matt Logie (Whitworth), Mike Maker (Williams), Mike Miller (Alvernia), Todd Raridon (North Central), Michael Schauer (Wheaton), Bob Semling (UW-Stevens Point), Jim Shaw (Rose-Hulman), Tom Spanbauer (Cortland), Johnny Tauer (St. Thomas), Kevin Vande Streek (Calvin), and Bob Walsh (Rhode Island College).
In 2012-13, Flockerzi guided Rochester to a 22-5 overall record, 10-4 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester shared the UAA title with Washington (Mo.) and Emory University. The Yellowjackets earned a berth in the NCAA Division III championships and hosted two rounds of play. Rochester defeated Fitchburg State University, 91-86, in the first round. The Yellowjackets lost, 70-68, to Ithaca College in the second round when the Bombers tipped in a missed shot at the final buzzer.
This was Rochester's second UAA title in three seasons under Flockerzi. His record at Rochester is 61-19 (.763). In the UAA, he has a 30-12 record (.714). Rochester won the UAA title in his first season with a 12-2 record and advanced to the Sweet 16. The Yellowjackets finished 22-6 overall. In 2011-12, Rochester was 17-8, 8-6 in the UAA.
He was an assistant coach at Rochester for one year (2006-07) and helped the Yellowjackets get into the NCAA playoffs. He took over as the head coach at Skidmore College in 2007-08. In three seasons, he won 30 games and took the Thoroughbreds into the Liberty League playoffs. Overall, his coaching record for six years is 91-65 (.583).
Rochester had a 5-2 record against teams selected for the NCAA Division III playoffs this season. The Yellowjackets started 18-0 and rose to the number one ranking in the
D3hoops.com poll.
In the past two seasons, Rochester has set back-to-back records for foul shooting accuracy. In 2011-12, Rochester shot 78.0% (380 of 487). That narrowly broke the mark of 77.9 (478 of 614) set by the 1991-92 team. In 2012-13, the Yellowjackets shot 80.4% from the line (434-540) to break last year's record.
The Glenn Robinson award is presented annually to the top Division III men's basketball coach. It is named after the longtime Franklin & Marshall head coach. Robinson has over 800 wins and is currently 12
th on the all-time wins list. He has taken F&M to the NCAA Division III playoffs 22 times. He guided the Diplomats to the Final Four in 1979, 1991, 1996, 2000, and 2009. He has won 21 or more games in a season 23 times.
